[infected cell protein 22; infected cell polypeptide 22] (Herpes simplex virus ICP22) This protein of 420 amino acids is encoded by the alpha22 gene of HSV-1 (Herpes simplex virus alpha22 protein). The gene overlaps with the US1.5 gene and is located at the left terminus of the unique short sequence (US) of Herpes simplex virus 1 (Ogle and Roizman, 1999; Post and Roizman, 1987; Watson et al, 1981). The US1.5 protein is expressed from a shorter mRNA and consists of approximately 60 % of the carboxyl-terminal amino acid sequence of the ICP22 (Carter and Roizman, 1996). The shared portion of the gene products is required for efficient viral replication in rodent and rabbit
