This peptide, GKYSFGATCVKK, corresponds to amino acids 283-294 of the EGF receptor (EGFR(293-294)) and functions as a targeting peptide for the receptor (erbB1) (Staberg et al, 2013). Herfin-1 functions as an ErbB1 antagonist that binds to the extracellular domain of ErbB1. In cells that express high levels of the receptor (U87 and U118 cells) Herfin-1 inhibits receptor phosphorylation induced by EGF and also inhibits cell migration. Herfin-1 also increases neurite outgrowth in cerebellar granule neurons.
