[HBV core protein; hepatitis B virus core protein] HBc is a protein of 21 kDa encoded in the genome of Hepatitis B virus. The protein, which contains a capsid assembly domain at the N-terminus (residue 1-149) and an arginine-rich domain (ARD) at the C-terminus (residues 150-183) (Birnbaum and Nassal, 1990; Nassal, 1992), is essential for viral replication (Hirsch et al, 1990). The arginine-rich domain is required for pregenome encapsidation and productive viral positive-strand DNA synthesis but not for virus assembly. It also contains signals for nuclear export and import of HBc core protein and particles (Li et al, 2010).
