This bioactive fragment of HB-EGF (GKRKKKGKGLGKKRDPCLRKYK; Gly-Lys-Arg-Lys-Lys-Lys-Gly-Lys-Gly-Leu-Gly-Lys-Lys-Arg-Asp-Pro-Cys-Leu-Arg-Lys-Tyr-Lys) corresponds to amino acids 30-51 of the mature protein which is itself derived from a larger proform. It has been described as having activity as an antimicrobial peptide by Malmsten et al (2007) who also stated that HB-EGF itself possesses antimicrobial activities.
For other proteins (or fragments thereof) with at least one additional activity that differs from the established 'classical' activity of the parent protein see also: Dual identity proteins and Cryptides MiniCOPE Dictionary.
