Grammistins constitute a large family of antibacterial peptide toxins of soapfish species (Grammistes sexlineatus, Pogonoperca punctata). Their sizes vary between 12 and 28 amino acids. Kaji et al (2006) have cloned the cDNAs for some of the Pogonoperca punctata peptides.
Some of these peptides have hemolytic and ichthyotoxic activities and all have antibacterial activity with a broad spectrum (Sugiyama et al, 2005; Shiomi et al, 2000).
