[Gonadotrophin surge-attenuating factor]. This activity was identified originally as an ovarian factor that reduces pituitary secretion of luteinizing hormone induced by GNRH [gonadotropin releasing hormone] (de Jong et al, 1979). It has been referred to also as GnSIF [gonadotropin surge-inhibiting factor] (Danforth et al, 1987; Mroueh et al, 1996) (hence the abbreviations GnSAF/IF and GnSIF/AF). The activity has been referred to also as attenuin (Mroueh et al, 1996).
GnSAF activity exists in animals and also in humans (Geiger et al, 1980; Sopelak and Hodgen, 1984; Messinis et al, 1985, 1986). In women undergoing ovulation induction, GnSAF attenuates the endogenous
