abbr. GLS. This factor is isolated from extracts of a neurofibroma (Asai et al, 1992). It is a homodimer consisting of two 50 kDa subunits. This protein (see also: Neurotrophins, neurotrophic factors) is a potent inhibitor of the proliferation of glioma cells and stimulated astroblasts. It is inactive on neuronal cells.
Gliostatin probably plays an important role in the development and regeneration of the central nervous system. It is involved probably also in angiogenic processes connected with the development of the blood-brain barrier. The factor is identical with PD-ECGF [platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor] (Asai et al, 1992).
