GRA1

this protein is a major (one of eight) excreted/secreted dense granule antigen of the obligate intracellular protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. GRA1 is a 23 kDa calcium-binding protein, identified originally as antigen P24. It is secreted by tachyzoites and bradyzoites (Cesbron-Delauw et al, 1989). It induces humoral immune responses in mice and humans in the chronic phase of the infection (Cesbron-Delauw et al, 1989). GRA1 is protective in animal models of infection (Duquesne et al, 1991; Supply et al, 1999). Immunization of sheep with recombinant Mycobacterium bovis BCG producing and secreting GRA1 results in specific, partially protective cellular immune responses characterized by the production of IFN-gamma (Supply et al, 1999).
