approved gene symbol: EMB. Embigin is a glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily, and is preferentially expressed before 10 days of gestation during mouse embryogenesis and in embryonal carcinoma cells (Huang et al, 12990). The mouse gene has been cloned by Tachikui et al (1999). The protein has been identified independently as Teratocarcinoma glycoprotein Gp-70.
One role of embigin appears to be promotion of integrin-mediated cell-substratum adhesion (Huang et al, 1993). Embigin is expressed strongly in the endoderm during early postimplantation embryogenesis, and in the somite stage in the gut and visceral endoderm and may play roles in early postimpantation embryogenesis (Fan et al, 1998).
