[ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 5; Ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase family member 5]; also: NPP-5 [nucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase-5]. ENPP5 belongs to a group of widely and phylogenetically conserved proteins known as Ecto-nucleotide pyrophosphates/phosphodiesterases (ENPP). These enzymes catalytically interact with a wide range of nucleotides (purines and pyrimidines) and their derivatives. They are able to hydrolyse the pyrophosphate and phosphodiester bonds of their substrates to nucleoside 5’monophosphates (Zimmermann, 1999; reviewed in Bollen et al, 2000; Stefan et al, 2005).
