[Endometrial bleeding associated factor] The gene (human chromosome 1q42.1) encoding this factor has been described by Kothapalli et al (1997). This factor is a member of the TGF-beta protein superfamily and is the same as TGF-beta-4 (Tabibzadeh et al, 1998). The factor is identical also with lefty A and lefty-2, a factor that is involved in left-right symmetry determination in embryos (Kosaki et al, 1999).
EBAF has a unique expression pattern in human endometrium. It is expressed in human endometrium during the late secretory and menstrual phases and is absent in proliferative, early and mid-secretory endometria. EBAF mRNA is expressed mainly in the stroma and hardly in the endometrial glands or endothelial cells.
