a family of antibacterial peptides with cytotoxic activities at higher concentrations. The proteins are unrelated to defensins. They contain a conserved N-terminal cathelin proregion - the cathelin domain - and a variant C-terminal antibacterial domain (Zanetti et al, 1995; Zanetti, 2004; Lehrer and Ganz, 2002). Removal of the cathelin domain liberates the active antimicrobial peptide.
