[Cyclic AMP-responsive element] cAMP second messenger pathways provide a chief means by which cellular growth, differentiation, and function can be influenced by extracellular signals. CREs are a common feature of all cAMP-responsive gene promoters and were first identified as an inducible enhancer of genes that can be transcribed in response to increased cAMP levels.
The CRE sequence element is an octanucleotide motif (TGACGTCA), which is characterized by a conserved core sequence, 5'-TGACG-3'. CRE serves as a binding site for specific DNA binding proteins that function as transcription factors and influence the expression of those genes containing a CRE element. Regulatory factors binding to a CRE sequence are generally named CREB
