[Cold-inducible RNA-binding protein]. The approved gene symbol is CIRBP [Cold-inducible RNA-binding protein]. The protein has been identified independently as A18 hnRNP (hnRNP A18) [heterogeneous ribonucleoprotein A18] and shown to play a protective role in the genotoxic stress response (Yang and Carrier, 2001; Yang et al, 2006). Nishiyama et al (1997) have cloned the mouse gene, and identified it as Glycine-rich RNA-binding protein, showing that it is involved in the suppression of cell growth. The human gene has been cloned by Nishiyama et al (1997).
