[chemotaxis inhibitory protein of Staphylococcus aureus] This protein of 14.1 kDa (121 amino acids) is a secreted virulence factor produced by >60 % of clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus. It is encoded by the chp gene. The early expression CHIPS drives instant immune evasion by Staphylococcus aureus (Rooijakkers et al, 2006). The protein is encoded by a bacteriophage (de Haas et al, 2004). The CHIPS fragment consisting of residues 31-121 (CHIPS31-121) has been shown to possess the same activity in blocking the C5a receptor CD88 compared to full-length CHIPS, but completely lacks FPR antagonism (Haas et al, 2005).
CHIPS specifically impairs the response of neutrophils and monocytes to formylated peptides and C5a. CHIPS reduces
