This peptide (often abbreviated CAR), which is homologous to heparin-binding sites in various proteins and binds to cell surface heparan sulfate and heparin, has been identifed by Järvinen and Ruoslahti (2007) through phage display library screening as a homing peptide that homes to wounds in mice. Intravenously injected peptide selectively accumulates at wound sites, co-localizing partially with blood vessels. The peptide shows a preference for early stages of wound healing. The peptide is internalized into the target cells and has been shown to deliver a fluorescent label into the cell nuclei.
