BayK8644 is a dihydropyridine derivative structurally related to the calcium channel antagonist Nifedipine. In contrast to Nifedipine, it functions as a calcium channel agonist. BayK8644 acts as a competitive antagonist of nifedipine in contractility experiments. It increases calcium channel activity by directly interacting with Calcium channels to promote entry of calcium ions (Ochi et al, 1984; Thomas et al, 1985; Schramm et al, 1983).
