[Activin receptor-like kinase 8] The receptor is a member of the ALK family of receptors. It was identified first in zebrafish as a receptor for bone morphogenetic proteins. De Caestecker et al (2002) have reported that ALK8 also binds TGF-beta in the presence of the TGF-beta receptor type 2 (see: TGFBR2).
Payne-Ferreira and Yelik (2003) have reported that ALK8 is required for neural crest cell formation and development of pharyngeal arch cartilages.
