(-1-) Alpha-cells
These cells, called also Alpha-cells, are found at the periphery of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas and are histologically distinct cells from the beta-cells of the islets of Langerhans (Lane, 1907; Bencosme and Frei, 1956; Wirdnam and Milner, 1981). A-cells and pancreatic Beta-cells are derived from an islet progenitor cell and follow independent lineage pathways rather than arising from a common mutihormonal progenitor cell (Docherty, 2001).
