A subclone of the human glioblastoma cell line 86HG39. Expression of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase in both cell lines, which leads to the production of N-formyl kynurenine from L-tryptophan, has been used by Däubener et al (1994) as a sensitive bioassay for IFN-gamma.
The amount of kynurenine produced appears to be directly proportional to the amount of IFN-gamma used to activate cells. The detection limit for IFN-gamma of this assay is 20 U/mL. IFN-alpha, IFN-beta, IL1, IL2, IL6, GM-CSF or TNF-alpha do not induce the production of detectable amounts of kynurenine in
