[vocal fold stellate cell]
These cells have been identified in the human adult vocal fold mucosa (Sato et al, 2001). The cells are irregular and stellate in shape, possess slender cytoplasmic processes. They actively synthesize collagenous fibers, including reticular fibers, as well as other extracellular matrix molecules, such as elastic fibers and glycosaminoglycan. Sato et al (2003) have shown that the cells possess lipid droplets and store vitamin A. Fuja et al (2005) have reported that, during cell culture, the cells undergo transdifferentiation to a phenotype resembling that of myofibroblasts. This phenotype resembles, but is not identical to, activated hepatic stellate cells
