[viral NR-13] Aouacheria et al (2003) have identified vnr-13 as a member of the BCL2 family encoded by alpha-herpesvirus of turkeys. vnr-13 shares 80 % homology with the NR-13 apoptosis inhibitor. vnr-13 inhibits cell death by apoptosis and also reduces the rate of cellul proliferation. Unlike other BCL2 homologs found in gamma-herpesvirus, which are intronless, vnr-13 has the same organization as the cellular NR-13 gene, suggesting that it may have been acquired from a reverse transcriptase product of an unspliced precursor RNA, or via direct recombination with host chromosomal DNA.
