This term pertains to the initial association of malignant cells with pre-existing microvessels and the acquisition of tumor vasculature by incorporation of host tissue capillaries (Thompson et al, 1987; Holash et al, 1999; Döme et al, 2002; Leenders et al, 2002). The process was described first to be limited to the initial phases of tumorigenesis (Holash et al, 1999), but may persist during the entire period of primary or metastatic tumor growth and has been observed in various types of cancers.
The use of pre-existent vessels was described first in the brain, one of the most densely vascularized organs in the body. One of the consequences of tumor development that does not require tumor cells to undergo phenotypic changes (see also: angiogenic switch) is that such tumors will not be affected by angiogenesis
