[uniformity detector cell]
This cell type is found in the retina and constitutes a rare kind of retinal ganglion cells. Uniformity detector retinal ganglion cells have been described in the rabbit eye (Levick, 1967) and appear to be the same cell type known as suppressed-by-contrast cells described in the cat (Rodieck, 1967) and the primate (de Monasterio, 1978). Mastronarde et al (1985) distinguishes two types of these cells that differ principally in whether they are suppressed tonically or transiently by contrast in the receptive field. A two pathway model for tonic suppressed-by-contrast cell activity has been described by Niu and Yuan (2008).
