These cells, called also superficial urothelial cells, superficial uroepithelial cells, or superficial bladder epithelial cells, are one of the three cell types found in the normal pseudo-stratified transitional epithelium coating the bladder (urothelium) (Jost et al, 1989). The urethelium is renewed perpetually but slowly with a 40-week turnover (Jost, 1989). Umbrella cells are terminally differentiated superficial cells lining the mucosal surface of the bladder.
