This protein is secreted into the conditioned medium by a wide variety of rodent and human tumor cells. Tumor cells produce at least 10-fold or more of this protein as compared to their normal or untransformed counterparts. N-terminal and internal sequences derived from the rat tumor-secreted phosphoprotein indicate that it is identical with rat osteopontin.
Antibodies raised against the rat phosphoprotein also bind to proteins found in human milk. N-terminal and internal amino acid sequences derived from the milk protein are similar (12/21 residues) to N-terminal and internal sequences derived from the rat protein and osteopontin
