also Tumor-educated blood platelets; abbr. TEPs. This term refers to platelets which have been shown to be capable of sequester, in a tumor environment, tumor-derived proteins and nucleic acids (for overview see: Zhang et al, 2017; Best et al, 2017). (Klement et al (2009) have reported that these platelets sequester angiogenic factors such as VEGF, PDGF, bFGF. Nilsson et al (2011) have reported that blood platelets take up tumor-derived secreted membrane vesicles that can contain tumor-associated RNA, for example, most prominently those encoding the EGF receptor variant EGFRvIII from glioma, and the prostate cancer marker PCA3 but also many others.
