This term has been introduced to describe a situation in which a receptor-bound cytokine interacts on receptor subunits on nearby cells and induces signaling (Stonier and Schluns, 2010). This situation has been described for IL15, which is translocated to the cell surface as a complex together with the receptor alpha subunit and exists primarily in a form bound to the high affinity IL15 receptor subunit. IL15 signals through a beta subunit and a common gamma subunit. If these are expressed on opposing cells, receptor-bound IL15 on one cell can initiate signaling in the opposing cells. In a way, this set-up resembles trans-signaling, which involves soluble receptor/ligand complexes binding to signaling components on nearby
