[tonic neuron]
This term refers to the electrophysiological behaviour of neurons and describes one way in which action potentials are emitted from these cells. Tonic neurons or tonic cells, unlike phasic neurons, show sustained responses and continuously generate action potentials throughout the stimulation period and thus are more likely involved in the integration of signals rather than signal detection.
