This Caenorhabditis elegans gene encodes a single member of the toll receptor family. Tenor and Aballay (2008) have reported a function of tol-1 in innate immunity, showing that tol-1 is required to prevent Salmonella enterica invasion of the pharynx. A direct role in defence responses to certain Gram-negative bacteria is indicated by the observation that tol-1 is required for the correct expression of the antimicrobial peptide abf-2 and one of the heat shock protein 16.41 (HSP-16.41) required for Caenorhabditis elegans immunity. tol-1 mutants are defective also in their avoidance of pathogenic Serratia marcescens, although other chemosensory behaviors are wild-type (Pujol et al, 2001; Pradel et al, 2007).
