[tissue-specific stem cell]
This term, also tissue-resident stem cells, essentially refers to stem cells residing in particular tissues or organs. As such the term is used frequently synonymously with the term adult stem cells.
Tissue-specific stem cells persist throughout the entire lifespan to repair and maintain tissues, but their potential for self-renewal and differentiation becomes dysregulated with aging as a result of cumulative cellular and genomic damages that lead to permanent cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, or senescence (Janzen et al, 2006; Rossi et al, 2008; Sahin and Depinho, 2010).
