The cytoplasmic synthetase catalyzes the esterification of threonin to its cognate tRNA, which is an early step in protein biosynthesis (Carter, 1993). In the enzyme catalogue nomenclature the synthetase has been designated EC6.1.1.3.
Role as moonlighting protein
Apart from its role as an aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase charging tRNAs with the cognate amino acid, threonyl-tRNA synthetase has other functions and thus can be regarded as a member of a growing group of proteins referred to as moonlighting proteins
