This general collective term has been used to refer to factors released by viable cells or exposed on their cells surface that prevent them to be phagocytosed like apoptotic cells. One such signal has been identified as CD31. Brown et al (2002) have reported that CD31 prevents phagocyte ingestion of closely apposed viable cells by transmitting detachment signals.
