[src homology domain]
Name given to highly conserved noncatalytical structural sequence domains detected initially in the src oncogene, which encodes a 60 kDa protein tyrosine kinase. The SH2 domain (approximately 100 amino acids) has complex regulatory properties and modulates the protein tyrosine kinase activity present in the carboxy-terminal half of the src protein. A single point mutation in the SH2 region of the cellular src gene can activate its transforming potential. The SH3 domain (approximately 50-60 amino acids) is a distinct motif the biological function of which has not been elucidated completely. SH3 domains
