This cell type has been isolated from adult murine tissues (Vacanti et al, 2001) and is said to be found in all tissues. Nothing is known about their cell surface markers but the cells are probably related to VSEL-SC [very small embryonic-like stem cells] and may represent a population of so-called small stem cells. The cells have been claimed to be multipotential and to be able to survive extreme conditions that would lead to cell death of differentiated cells or partially differentiated cells (For details see also the patent application in the speculative article by Shmilovici (2007).
Note: Miyanishi et al (2013) have questioned the existence of VSEL-SC [
