abbr. SSP (a term with multiple meanings). The cDNA for this secreted rat protein of 124 amino acids has been cloned by Iwatsuki et al (2000). SSP mRNA is expressed specifically in spongiotrophoblasts during the latter half of pregnancy.
Achur et al (2006) have shown that spongiotrophoblast specific protein is a uniquely low sulfated extracellular chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan bearing chondroitin sulfate chains, which comprise only approximately 2 % 4-sulfated and the remainder non-sulfated disaccharides.
