This bioactive peptide fragment (see also: cryptides) is derived from the extracellular matrix protein F-spondin (Karagiannis and Popel, 2007). Spondinstatin-1 [F-spondin(621-639)] [SEWSDCSVTCGKGMRTRQR] corresponds to residues 621-639 of F-spondin (SPON1 [spondin-1]) (Karagiannis and Popel, 2008). The primary structure of this peptide is similar to the thrombospondin type 1 domains found in thrombospondin-1, thrombospondin-2, the metalloproteinases ADAMTS1 and ADAMTS8.
