solitary chemosensory cells

[solitary chemosensory cell]

These singular, spindle-shaped, secondary sensory cells in the epidermis of fish are characterized by a brush of rigid apical microvilli with long rootlets (Whitear, 1965, Kotrschal et al, 1997) and are thought to be an example of what is generally being referred to as brush cells or tuft cells by morphological criteria (for overview see also: Sbarbati and Osculati, 2005). They most likely correspond to the Stiftchenzellen (German for little or small rod) of tadpoles (Whitear et al, 1976). Such cells resemble taste cells but are not organized in end organs and have been found also in mammals (Sbarbati and Osculati, 2003, 2005; Tizzano et al, 2006)
