[smoker cell]
this term has been used to refer to numerous highly fluorescent macrophages found in the lungs of smokers and subjects who have quit smoking within 5 years. These brightly fluorescent macrophages are not present in the lungs of individuals who never smoked. Pauly et al (2005) have reported that the fluorescence is not due to smoke-induced changes in the autofluorescence of endogenous compounds but is due to tobacco tar.
