abbr. Spoc cells. These cells are small CD34(-) CD45(-) CD117(-) non-adherent cells isolated from skeletal muscle tissue (Winitsky et al, 2005). The cells aggregate spontaneously and have properties or cardiac myocytes but are neither satellite cells nor differentiated muscle cells. Spoc cells exhibit spontaneous action potentials, but, unlike cardiac pacemaker cells, their electrical activity is suppressed with the sodium channel blocker tetrodotoxin.
A subpopulation of these cells, which are Sca-1(-), has the capacity to differentiate into autonomously beating cardiomyocytes
