abbr. shRBCs. This term refers to transient morphological changes observed of rainbow trout Ficoll-purified red blood cells cultured in vitro, in particular when exposed to heat stress. This cell stage shows reduced density of the cytoplasm, loss of hemoglobin, decondensed chromatin in the nucleus, and expression of the B-cell marker IgM. Shape-shifted red blood cells share some features of mammalian primitive pyrenocytes (extruded nucleus surrounded by a thin rim of cytoplasm and phosphatidylserine exposure on cell surface).
