This term has been introduced by Summers et al (2014) to refer to a particular kind of cell death observed in neurons. It occurs in primary mouse sensory neurons following mitochondrial depolarization, which also triggers axon degeneration. These degenerative events are not blocked by inhibitors of canonical programmed cell death pathways such as apoptosis, necroptosis, and parthanatos but depend on the axodestructive factor Sarm1 [sterile alpha and TIR motif containing 1], a protein shown to be an essential component of the Wallerian degeneration program (Osterloh et al, 2012; Gerdts et al, 2013), loss of which also blocks neuronal cell
