This term pertains to a particular morphology of cells and does not refer to a specific cell type. Ring cells are myeloid cells with ring-shaped nuclei. They are observed in the peripheral blood of patients with myeloproliferative diseases, but only rarely in healthy control subjects (Stavem et al, 1969; Langenhuijsen, 1984). Ring cells are usually referred to as polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Polymorphonuclear leukocyte-like ring cells expressing high levels of Gr-1 (and also mononuclear cell-like ring cells with low levels of GR-1) are present in the bone marrow, peripheral blood, and inflammatory infiltrates of mice.
