ribosomal protein S19

abbr. and approved gene symbol: RPS19. Ribosomal protein S19 is a structural component of the 40S subunit of ribosomes (40S ribosomal protein S19) (Kenmochi et al, 1998; Vladimirov et al, 1996). The protein has been implicated in the maturation of 40S ribosomal subunits (Flygare et al, 2007). The protein is essential for ribosome biogenesis as cells depleted for ribosomal protein S19 show defects in 18S ribosomal RNA synthesis and small ribosomal subunit production (Idol et al, 2007). The cDNA encoding ribosomal protein S19 has been cloned by Kondoh et al (1992). The gene structure has been described by Draptchinskaia et al (1999) (for gene structure see also: Yoshihama et al, 2002).
