Ribosomal protein S15 is a key component of the ribosomal binding site of mRNA of the 40S subunit of eukaryotes (40S ribosomal protein S15), in contrast to its prokaryotic counterpart, RPS19 [Ribosomal protein S19], which is located away from the mRNA binding track on the ribosome (Khairulina et al, 2010). Rouquette et al (2005) have reported that ribosomal protein S15 is required for its nuclear export of the pre-40S ribonuclear particle and that knock-down of ribosomal protein S15 expression results in the complete disappearance of the 40S ribosomal subunit.
