abbr. and approved gene symbol: RPS13. This protein is a component of the 40S subunit of ribosomes (40S ribosomal protein S13) (Kenmochi et al, 1998; Vladimirov et al, 1996). A cDNA encoding human ribosomal protein S13 has been cloned by Chadeneau et al (1993). Kenmochi et al (1996) have reported that the S13 gene contains five introns and that introns 3 and 5 encode U14 small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNA). The regions involved in binding to 18S rRNA and the consensus sequences for snoRNAs are highly conserved among the genes in the two species in humans and Xenopus laevis
