This cell type covering > 80 % of the eroded surfaces of future bone formation sites during bone remodelling are different from bone-resorbing osteoclasts and bone- forming osteoblasts and represent osteoprogenitor cells, the stem cells that can develop into osteoblasts and osteocytes (Andersen et al, 2013; Lassen et al, 2017).
