[retinal ganglion P cell]
A specialized type of retinal ganglion cells (neurons) identified by characteristic temporal-frequency responses that differ from other retinal ganglion neurons known as M cells (Benardete and Kaplan, 1999).
P cells are being referred to also as midget ganglion cells (or simply midget cells) and are being referred to also as tonic ganglion cells. The name P cells derives from the observation that tonic fibers terminate in the parvocellular layer of the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus.
