[retinal ganglion M cell]
[M retinal ganglion cells] A specialized type of retinal ganglion cells (neurons) identified by characteristic temporal-frequency responses that differ from other retinal ganglion neurons known as P cells (Benardete et al, 1999). The name M cells derives from the observation that their fibers terminate in the magnocellular layer of the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus.
M cells are known also as Parasol cells or parasol ganglion cells. For another designation see also: phasic ganglion cells.
