This term refers to regulatory circuits maintaining homeostasis of peripheral vacular resistance as well as volume and electrolyte composition of body fluids. The main components of one arm of the system are the enzyme Renin and the octapeptide hormone Angiotensin-2. Renin, together with ACE [angiotensin-converting enzyme], process angiotensinogen to Angiotensin-2, with Angiotensin-1 as an intermediate. In addition, the system also involves a second axis, which is provided by the processing product of Angiotensin-1, Ang(1-7) [angiotensin-(1-7)], an effector peptide generated by a mechanism not involving ACE
